In Mayakoba, water is more than the essence of life; it is the most romantic mode of travel. We designed an enclave that is pedestrian friendly and soothingly free from the intrusive growl of the automobile. Residences are nestled in low density, environmentally sensitive surroundings. Villas are enclosed by jungle-lined lagoons; the manicured fairways of the Greg Norman Designed Golf Course and a beautiful beach give way to views that reach all the way to Cozumel.
Aboard thatched, environmentally quiet boats, you will meander through Mayakoba’s 1,600 acres of winding canals that take you from Villa to golf course, fine dining to Spa pavilions and the pristine beach and private beach clubs.
It’s no accident that the beaches of Mayakoba are considered among the best in the world. When the architects and developers began to create the masterplan for Mayakoba, they knew immediately that careful design would be required in order to maintain the pristine beach. To do that, they invested dozens of years and millions of dollars studying the ancient Mayan technique of socoleo, a way to manage the natural balance of nature and the importance of the mangrove jungle as a filter for fresh water lagoons which, in turn, promote a healthy beach.
As a result, they planted more than 47,000 mangrove trees and created a nursery of over 300,000 indigenous plants to ensure the environmental longevity of the resort.
Unlike other high-profile hotels and resorts that are built up without respect for the landscape, Mayakoba is specifically created as a best-practice model for creating a luxury enclave that preserves and protects the beach, the jungles and the wildlife for future generations.
